How mobile RPGs handle progression, for better and worse
Progression is the heart of any RPG, and on mobile it's where the genre either shines or quietly turns into a chore. After playing a dozen of them this year, I keep coming back to the same question: does leveling up feel earned, or does it feel like the game is stalling me?
The best examples, like Emberfall Saga, tie progression to choices. Every point you spend closes some doors and opens others, so building your party feels personal. The worst ones just gate content behind a number and hope you'll grind to reach it.
A good sign of healthy design is when optional content stays optional. If the main story flows without forcing you to farm the same encounter twenty times, the developers trust their own combat. If you're grinding just to keep up with the plot, something's off.
My tip for anyone starting a new mobile RPG: don't spend your first skill points immediately. Play a few hours, see how combat actually feels, then respec around your real playstyle. Most modern ones let you do it cheaply.
Progression should feel like a story of its own. When it clicks, watching your party grow is as satisfying as any plot twist.
